Dr.Barker'sCourse at School of Public Affairs

From the 8th  October till 5th November 2019, Dr.Kathryn ChangBarker, an education management expert from Canada, visited our school and taught leadership theory and development course to international students, which was highly praised by teachers and students.

Dr.Barker holds a PhD in Education Administration from the University of Alberta, Canada. She has over 40 years of experience in education, and 7 years experience working with USTC.She has worked at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman,Monash Universityin Malaysia, and many other universities. Dr.Barker who has lived and worked in Asia for many years, is particularly knowledgeable about Chinese and western education and culture. 



In the nearly one-month teaching activity, Dr.Barker, with her rich knowledge and teaching experience, elaborated on the theories related to leadership, analyzed the cultural differences between China, western countries, and the‘Belt and Road’ route countries. She guided international students to use SWOT analysis to think about where and how to become leaders, how to acceptd ifferences, how to train and improve oneself. Dr.Barker gave the students a lot to learn and also give two quizzes to help measure their own learning.

The international students showed great interest in Dr.Barker’scourse, and the class atmosphere was lively. Even after class, the students interacted with each other in the WeChat group to discuss the course and express their love for Dr.Barker. At the end of the class, the students were reluctant to part with Dr.Barker and posed for photos. At the same time, Dr.Barker also praised the students' learning and expressed the hope to come to our school again for cooperation and program development.
